Which of these three pictures did you like the best?
There is no 'wrong answer' to this question. You like what you like. Most
people, though, will probably like picture number 3 the best. Do you
agree? Underneath the pictures I explain why number 3 works best for
most people.

The human brain is easily bored. Most brains see a red rectangle and a
blue rectangle in picture 1 which are sitting side by side. The colours may
be interesting, but the pattern or design is quite boring.
Picture 2 is exactly the same except that the dark blue rectangle lies a little
on top of the red rectangle. The blue rectangle is also lower on the page.
The dark blue rectangle 'overlaps' the red rectangle. Part of the red
rectangle hides behind the blue rectangle. The brain finds this more
interesting. In picture 2 the red and blue rectangles begin to form an angle
or diagonal. The brain finds this more interesting than straight lines.
Picture 3 has the same overlap of dark blue on red, the same angled,
diagonal pattern is starting to happen. Here the dark blue rectangle is
smaller as well. The different sizes of elements in a picture make the
picture more interesting still.
