Would you like to draw a tree?
Do you know what the words underlined in blue mean?  If you are not sure

Small children sometimes draw lollipop trees rather like this one.
Lollipop trees are cute, but they are not very
realistic.
Older children sometimes draw broccoli trees like this one.  I
like broccoli trees (better than I like broccoli) but they don't look
much like real trees.
One way to draw a more realistic tree is to start with a letter Y,
like the brown letter Y on my piece of paper here.  We don't
have to draw it carefully.  We can draw it quite quickly.
Here's the
same Y again.
Add another Y
on top.
And another Y
to the spare
'arm' of the first.
Add another Y!
And another and another and another and another....
And another and another and another and another.... only now my Y's
are getting smaller!
There are quite
a few more Y's
here.  Can you
see?  And I
have just
started to make
the trunk of my
tree, the Y I
started with,
thicker.
Still more Y's -
thin ones to
form the outer
branches.  And
here the trunk
and lower
branches are
being made a
little thicker too.
Dashes and
splashes of
green begin to
make my leaves.
Enough leaves
for you to see,
growing off the
Y branches.
Where the
leaves are
thickest bits of
the branches
will be hidden.
And here I hope you will see the Y Tree grow!
